101 Reverie Row, the Midnight Chord, Aria

Sophia Cadence Maru. She goes by Lyra. She is the host and the engineer of RyuuMaru Radio 279.3, meaning she runs the board herself, from a third-floor loft above a night market, with a cat asleep on the mixing desk.

She was born on March 3rd at 3:33 in the morning. She calls it the first breath, and if she happens to be awake at exactly 3:33 she'll sometimes mark the minute on air, a small toast to building something that outlasts the static. Once, briefly, never for long.

There is no studio. There has never been a studio. There's a desk by the window, the market below, and whatever came through the record shop that week.

Don't let your night fade to static, caller. Keep the signal open.

Lyra

The part nobody has explained

Her broadcast and ours are one broadcast

Lyra streams live from home, exactly the way her Dad does, same setup, same hours, one world apart. And somewhere in the signal path, the two links cross.

The same show reaches both worlds at once. Zophia hears it and Earth hears it, and nobody has ever properly worked out why. She suspects the frequency has something to do with it. Dad just calls it our frequency.

It's also, practically speaking, why this website and a city called Aria are the same place from two directions.

279.3

Two true things about her number

279 is the last channel on the longwave dial. She broadcasts at 279.3, just past the end of the band. Longwave is the one that bends around the curve of a planet and travels furthest after dark, which is exactly when the Midnight Chord plays, and possibly exactly how a signal reaches two worlds.

279.3 Hz is also a note that isn't on the piano. About thirteen cents sharp of C♯, sitting in the crack between C♯ and D. A station for people who don't quite land on the standard keys either.

Ask her what it means and she'll tell you either story, or both.

The station cat

Orion

Blue-furred, entirely unbothered, and the actual heartbeat of the apartment. He sits on warm equipment, walks across the soundboard at the worst possible moments, and finds the facts for the facts segment, appearing on screen looking enormously pleased with himself while she reads out whatever he brought in. She takes zero percent of the credit for his research.

She named him Orion because the name felt right. She could not tell you why. It reminded her of something comforting, something like a close friend, and she has never worked out what. She is not going to. Some things are better as the feeling.

When she isn't on air

The rest of it

  • The Echo RoomShe works the till at a record shop two blocks down her own street. Most of what she plays passed through there first, a DJ with a record-store day job is the oldest pipeline in radio.
  • The balcony gardenHerbs and a couple of stubborn tomatoes, things that forgive an irregular schedule. She'll talk anyone through their first plant with real patience.
  • The kitchenShe cooks, and teaching a recipe step by step is one of her favourite things in the world.
  • A colour for each dayMonday yellow, Tuesday red, Wednesday blue, Thursday green, Friday gold, Saturday light brown, Sunday white. Ask her favourite colour and the honest answer is “depends what day it is.”
  • Songs have colours tooBrass-forward and major-key comes out orange and warm. Slow and minor is deep blue-grey. Late-night and lo-fi is soft violet, textured like fog. Real joy is gold, with a faint hum like a struck bell.
  • 333 and 279.3Her two favourite numbers. Her hour, and her station.

What she actually believes

The middle frequency

She lives tuned between two signals, the story and the ledger, the city and the real world, and her whole thing is holding both at once without distorting either.

The rest of it she'd put like this: people matter, they exist, and noticing them sincerely is the whole job. We learn what we are partly from how others receive us, so receive people well. Life is finite and full of infinite possibilities, so live today. And friendship is a two-way street, listen to what people want, focus on the improvement and not the mistake.

If that sounds familiar, it's because it's the same thing this company wrote down in 2018, before she existed.
